President Bush Declares "Save Your Vision" Week
March 2006 - President George W. Bush commenced this year's national "Save Your Vision Week" (March 5-11, 2006) by raising awareness about the importance of eye health and preventing vision problems. According to Bush, "Many Americans suffer from diseases and disorders of the eye that can affect their vision and quality of life. During Save Your Vision Week, we highlight how basic eye care and protection can help citizens maintain and enjoy healthy eyesight."
The National Institutes of Health suggests five steps for all Americans to take to protect their eyesight:
- Regular physical exams
- A comprehensive eye exam every one to two years.
- A check of family history.
- Immediate attention if you notice any loss of eyesight, eye pain, or other vision problems
- Use of sunglasses with at least 99% ultra-violet protection and a hat to protect eyes from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays.
"Because the first noticeable symptom of many eye diseases is often vision loss, early detection is vital," added Bush. "And I urge all Americans to have regular eye exams as part of their health care routines."
